There are a number of non-medical hair loss products designed to hide thinning or balding hair. A few of the more common alternatives to hair restoration surgery are described below.

Hair Replacement Systems

Hair replacement systems (also referred to as toupees, hair prostheses, wigs, and weaves) are designed to provide a full head of hair all at once. There is no denying that this route of combating hair loss provides the most density and quickest results. These hair loss products are usually glued to the remaining hair on the head, and for both hygienic and cosmetic reasons must be periodically removed by cutting them off and re-gluing them (costing roughly $75-$100 per month). While it is possible to find a very good, near undetectable toupee, it takes a lot of diligence to maintain the appearance. Unfortunately, good toupees are often very expensive, and purchasing two hair replacement systems is usually a requirement to provide alternating use and repair of the systems. Prices range, but often climb into the $2,000-$4,000 for each unit. Furthermore, each hair replacement system needs to be replaced after a period of a few years, leading to a continuous outlay of money. Thus, these hair loss products work best for those people suffering from temporary forms of hair loss caused by chemotherapy or similar mechanisms. Some toupees may be purchased at reasonable costs, however, they are usually quite noticeable.

Topical Camouflage Products

Hair loss products such as sprays and powders provide another form of camouflage for the scalp. Both are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Usually applied once daily, these hair loss products are meant to blend in with the existing hair and cover the scalp. The most benefit can be gained from sprays and powders by those with a small balding area on the crown of the head, rather than frontal or temporal hair loss. Unfortunately, while providing an improved look from far away (i.e. improved look in photographs), these hair loss products could become more noticeable as one gets closer to the individual. Also, some products could stain and are removed once you shampoo. Similar to toupees and other hair replacement systems, these items provide temporary coverage rather than a permanent solution.
